Typical Class Structure

  1. Bow-in: The class begins with a formal bow-in ceremony, where students and instructors line up and bow as a sign of respect and readiness to start training.

  2. Warm-up: Classes typically start with a warm-up session to prepare the body for training. This may include light jogging, stretching exercises, and mobility drills to increase flexibility and prevent injuries.

  3. Ukemi (Breakfalls): Practicing breakfalls, or ukemi, is a crucial part of judo training. Students learn how to fall safely and efficiently to minimise the risk of injury during throws and groundwork.

  4. Technique Instruction: The main portion of the class is dedicated to learning and practicing judo techniques. The instructor will demonstrate various throws, pins, and submissions, explaining the mechanics and principles behind each technique. Students then pair up to practice the techniques with a partner, gradually increasing intensity as they become more proficient.

  5. Randori (Sparring): Randori sessions allow students to apply the techniques they've learned in a live, dynamic setting. Participants engage in controlled sparring sessions with partners of similar skill levels, focusing on timing, positioning, and strategy.

  6. Cool-down and Stretching: To conclude the class, students engage in a cool-down period to lower their heart rate and promote recovery. This may involve gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility and reduce muscle soreness. Junior classes may include a game-based activity involving agility, balance, coordination or speed towards the end of the session.

  7. Bow-out: The class concludes with a formal bow-out ceremony, where students and instructors line up and bow to show gratitude for the training and respect for each other.

  8. Recap and Feedback: Instructors often take time at the end of the class to recap the key lessons and provide feedback to students. This may include individual pointers on technique, advice for improvement, and encouragement for continued progress.
